Benefits of Hands-On Learning

  1. Greater retention of material

It has been proven through research that students learning through the Hands-On method, are going to have a lasting comprehension of things they do in comparison with the ones they only see or hear. Hands-On learning provides the students a visible foundation to learn the necessary skills required to work and complete their work safely and efficiently.

When looking at retention rates of other presentation styles versus Hands-On methods, research shows that learners retain as little as 5% of the material presented through lecture and 30% of which is taught by demonstration. Hands-On participation, on the other hand, can lead to as much as 75% retention rate.

  2. Enhances creativity and Improves Problem Solving

Hands-On Safety Training will expose students to challenges and obstacles they will encounter on the jobsite. Learners can then work through these scenarios on the Mobile Demo and Learning Center in a safe training environment, where they will develop their problem-solving skills without risk. Incorporating hands-on problem-solving exercises into this type of environment also allows learners to ask for help from the instructor and confer with peers to further develop problem-solving skills. The students will then be better equipped to deal with problems once training is complete.

Hands-on training allows learners to master skills prior to working in real-world environments.

  3. More enjoyable

Many worker-students fail to do their best in certain classes since they claim that it is boring to just sit around and listen to a long lecture. On the other hand, with Hands-On learning, the students are able to participate in the activities and thus it increases their motivation. The students will become more enthusiastic towards the lessons leading to improved results.

  4. Develops a sense of achievement

Performing a project successfully from start to finish gives the worker an important sense of achievement. The Hands-On learning environment also provides the worker the opportunity to get used to donning a harness properly, attach a lifeline to different types of anchors, how an energy absorbers works, assembling a guardrail, and these are just a few examples.

  5. Develops critical thinking

This is a very important benefit since critical thinking can be applied in many places in life. The main goal of the Hands-On learning is to enable the worker to make the required on-the-spot resolutions which can affect his/her and others safety.

Hands-On Safety Training, LLC has developed a training program using various Montessori type methods, therefore making peer interaction a vital part of the program.

Workers and their peers will work as a team (using the buddy system) to oversee and inspect each other throughout the learning process as the guide (instructor) oversees the interaction. The guide will be very specific when explaining every step in the process.

Everything that is taught will be repeated by the worker/student to the guide until he/she understands fully, and only then, the student will be asked to demonstrate what he /she has learned with his peers. The buddy system is crucial in every situation.

Repetition is Necessary
